"I was a shy, odd little girl," she said, "I spent a lot of time daydreaming, escaping into imaginary worlds. I started writing stories in elementary school. In second grade I won a district-wide essay competition. All the accolades and attention I received from adults cemented in my mind that I had a talent for writing."  Growing up during a period of tumultuous social upheaval in the United States begin to change the way she viewed the world. "I remember seeing teachers and staff at my elementary school crying because President Kennedy had been assassinated. It was a traumatic event that shook my world to the core." As she matured. Lola became active in youth, anti-poverty programs. "I understood at an early age that there were great inequities in life. I saw it all around me. While I always had a roof over my head, clothes to wear and plenty of food to eat, there were others-- friends, neighbors and classmates-- who didn't. I also started to notice that the color of my skin meant something to white people, something hateful. The ugliness of racism and poverty became part of my reality."

Lola "the writer" says uses her pen to "stir things up". "I'd like readers to care enough about an article or blog I've written to want to get involved in making a things better for the rest of us. I guess I'm recruiting foot soldiers for positive social change ."   Readers who like informative, entertaining, well-written articles will want to follow her blogs and travel journal entries on this site.  Find out what heartfelt issues and causes she's decided to put a spotlight on.
